Lee Jeong-Im

Kwon Jung-Hye
Abstract
Compared to high prevalence rate and large negative effect and socioeconomic harms of gambling addiction, studies regarding treatment of people with gambling addiction problems are quite rare in Korea. The study aims to find out the tendency and the meaning of the change of two participants suffering from gambling addiction who participated in Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy based on quantitative measures, responses during the programme, and subjective reports from the participants. The results suggest positive change in gambling urge, gambling symptoms, and gambling related cognitions. Enhancement of awareness and acceptance of gambling urge, decrease of gambling urge, understanding of chain of gambling behaviors, enhancement of acceptance toward slip and relapse, and clarification of values of life are discussed as a mechanism of therapeutic effects. Regarding limitations of case study, testing therapeutic effects through comparison of control group using more number of cases might be needed in future studies.
